Displaying Families |
Janet Finch ABSTRACT This article argues that the sociology of contemporary family relationships should be developed to recognize the importance of ‘displaying’ as well as ‘doing’ family. The addition of the concept of ‘display’ to the sociological tool kit is not only a necessary complement to the important conceptual developments which have taken place in recent years, but is also rich in its potential for further empirical and theoretical work. In developing this theme, the article examines empirical evidence from recent UK studies of family relationships, exploring why ‘display’ is important in contemporary family relationships as well as the process through which it occurs. The article represents an initial exploration of these themes. The author’s principal aim is to open up this aspect of family life for debate within the relevant sociological research community, encouraging others to refine the concept as well as to use it. Reinstating Pierre Bourdieu's contribution to cultural economy theorizing |
Sarah Hinde and Jane Dixon
Abstract Systematic ‘cultural economy’ analysis is a recent development in a long history of sociological thought about the relationship between economy and culture. Two recent benchmark texts demonstrate various innovative ways of doing cultural economy. However, we believe these books betray ambiguity about the historical roots of cultural economy theory, and overlook the multiple disciplinary perspectives that engage with these ideas. Surprisingly, Pierre Bourdieu is rarely acknowledged as an important progenitor of cultural economy theory, despite the fact his large and influential body of work was primarily concerned with the interpenetration of cultural and economic power, processes and practices. An application of Bourdieu’s ideas – in particular fields, habitus and capital – enriches cultural economy perspectives in three areas: the distinctive yet interdependent nature of cultural and economic spheres of action; attending to the role of power, class and economic relations in shaping culture; and understanding the daily lives of socially situated individuals. Traders, Technical Analysis and relationships |
Margery Mayall
Abstract Recent work in the sociology of financial markets has invoked the concept of the postsocial relationship as a way of theorizing the attachment of traders to financial markets, and the nature of their interactions with them. In this article, the use by share traders of the trading style known as Technical Analysis is offered as an example of a postsocial relationship. It looks at the way in which the relationship between traders and Technical Analysis develops, and the mutual dependence evidenced between the two. It also speculates that rather than replacing or competing with human–human relationships, the postsocial relationship between traders and Technical Analysis is potentially reinforced by, and may also facilitate changes to, traditional forms of human relations. Animals as disregarded pawns in family |
Animals as disregarded pawns in family violence: exclusionary practices Of feminist based refuge policies Sharon Brennan Introduction Commonly agreed upon is the relationship between family violence and violence toward nonhuman animals. Workers in the field of family violence also acknowledge that women may delay leaving a violent home due to loyalty to their nonhuman counterparts, and because refuge policies often do not allow them to accompany humans into safe shelter. The recent work of Clifton Flynn has indicated the relationship between nonhuman animals and human animals to be one of responsive interaction, with theoretical analyses most often based upon Goffman’s theory of symbolic interaction. Despite literature indicating the level o....f ادامه مطلب
